Socks for Students

Socks for Students Faith Lutheran Church, in a community effort for kids in District 186, is collecting pairs of socks for elementary school students. The need for this is so great and overlooked. Every school is in need! We will continue to collect socks throughout the year and be a "sock pantry" for the district. Please bring those socks to the church. We can do it.

Adopt-A-School
Faith adopted Black Hawk Elementary School, which is located just a few blocks from our Church. Volunteers assist with concession stand sales, score keeping, and time keeping for after school activities; presents for children in need at Christmas.

During December and January we collect hats, gloves, mittens, and scarves and deliver them to the school for the children in need.

During the summer we obtain a list of school supplies needed for each student and deliver these to the school. We also assist with teacher appreciation events two times each year. These events have included breakfast or lunch in the Teacher's Lounge, a note of appreciation in a mailbox, or some other thoughtful gesture.

Volunteers also work in the library assisting children with checking out books and shelving books.

Some of our members also mentor one hour each week, during the noon hour, with one child assigned by the teacher.

Food Ministry
Opportunities include:

Breadline Weekend - the profits from selling bread, usually in November, are distributed to various hunger programs in the Springfield area.

CROP Walk - occurs usually in late September or early October - Church youth and adults collect pledged monies and participate in the CROP Walk in downtown Springfield, and profits are donated to local and international hunger programs.

Meals for Community Agencies - three times each year, FELC members provide meals for clients associated with various Community Social Agencies, which have included the Sojourn Shelter, the Ronald McDonald House, and Helping Hands.

Food Bank - supplies are requested on an as-needed basis for non-perishable items in response to providing hurricane relief and for local food baskets during Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Lutheran World Relief Coffee Project - members order fair traded coffee, without inflated pricing,

through Lutheran World Relief to benefit the farmers.

Souper Bowl of Caring Weekend - occurs during the Football Super Bowl Weekend, and Faith members donate canned soup and money to benefit our local Food Pantries.

Recycling, Reusing & Repurposing

of items we no longer need or use is good stewardship! We are recycling aluminum CANs to purchase goats for orphans in Africa. These animals are easily cared for, reproduce frequently and produce easily digested, nutritious milk. Orphaned children will use the goats to help support themselves and their siblings. Each goat costs $25-50. Just deposit your rinsed aluminum CANs to be recycled in the receptacles by the front and back doors anytime you are at church. All money received from aluminum CANs is being sent to the ELCA Global Barnyard Project. How many families CAN we help just by recycling CANs?
