Back to School It's time to begin thinking of all the school supplies students will need to begin another school year. Once again we will be collecting: white glue, glue sticks, #2 pencils, notebooks, backpacks, loose leaf paper, crayons, washable markers, rulers. School supplies can be left on the table in the narthex. Food Ministry Opportunities include:
Breadline Weekend - the profits from selling bread, usually in Novemer, are distributed to various hunger programs in the Springfield area.
CROP Walk - occurs usually in late September or early October - Church youth and adults collect pledged monies and participate in the CROP Walk in downtown Springfield, and profits are donated to local and international hunger programs.
Meals for Community Agencies - Each year, FELC members provide meals for clients associated with various Community Social Agencies, which have included the Sojourn Shelter, the Ronald McDonald House, and Helping Hands. Food Bank - supplies are requested on an as-needed basis for non-perishable items in response to providing disaster relief and for local food baskets during Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Love Loaves - during Lent each year, members are given a "Love Loaf Bank" in which to collect monies designated for World Hunger.
Lutheran World Relief Coffee Project - members order fair traded coffee, without inflated pricing,
through Lutheran World Relief to benefit the farmers. Souper Bowl of Caring Weekend - occurs during the Football Super Bowl Weekend, and Faith members donate canned soup and money to benefit our local Food Pantries. Meal Service Plan, that includes preparing, delivering and serving a meal three times during the year to a residential social service facility. Recipients have included the Ronald McDonald House, Sojourn Shelter and Helping Hands. Other important ministries include... Black Hawk Elementary School Program, which partners with the school by mentoring students, training library assistants to reopen the library, collecting school supplies for students, donating and purchasing books for the classrooms and library, providing Angel Tree gifts to childrens' families, assisting in Intramural Basketball nights, and working in the Jingle Bell Holiday Shop...
Care Ministers Program, that recruits and trains members as Care Ministers to visit members who are homebound and hospitalized. These Ministers visit the homebound regularly and complement the Pastor's visits...

Aluminum Recycling Program, which collects aluminum cans on a regular basis. The cans are regularly recycled for cash and those proceeds are dontated to International Missions. The proceeds from the cans collected have been donated to "Wheels for the Word" Project, a Central-Southern Illinois Synod project to purchase bicycles for missionaries in Madagascar, building wells in Africa and Now we are collecting can to purchase goats for poor families in Africa. Two goats allow a family to become self-sufficient. On-going projects include St. John's Breadline Weekend; Souper Bowl of Caring Weekend; accepting personal hygiene items for Positive Options, Referrals, and Alternatives (PORA) ollecting calendars and notecards for LSSI Prison Ministries; collecting used devotional materials for overseas missions; collecting cereal tops for education; collecting Campbell's soup labels; collecting Yoplait yogurt tops for Cancer Research.
